he had walked forever. knowing not where his journey would take him but being drawn continually forward. at times he would struggle through densely overgrown forests, and at other times follow well worn paths. but always the paths would fade away, or lead to dead ends, where he would be forced to turn and start again.
and always the creature followed.
it would take many guises, sometimes a tiny bug, at other times an impassable giant, but always with the same purpose. it would harrow him on his journey, wearing him down with tiny painful stings, or crushing him with a powerful blow, then drag his lifeless body down into the darkness where it ruled.
he would lay in the clinging blackness, succumbing to the numbing pain, until eventually he would find the strength to drag himself back into the light.
but this time would be different, for he had been drawn from his path this day by the sweet sound of a gently flowing river. and when he reached the water a beautifully crafted sword was stood before him. he had felt an uncontrollable yearning then, and reached out to touch this softly glowing weapon, and the moment he did he was overcome with a feeling of warmth and power.
now the creature attacked, but it could not harm him, and he knew that he would never be beaten into the darkness again.
now he could find his way without fear.

and that, boys and girls, is why i'm an artist and not a writer :-)
this pic has 30+ hours of work in it now. mainly because i didn't know what i wanted it to look like until it was finished. plus it's about 5000x5000 pixels so theres actually a lot of detail tere, and textures and stuff. i did it that big because i'm getting a few prints done of it.
all original, done in photoshop cs2. no refs. 1 rock photo used for rock texture. the 3 wip stages leading up to this will be moved to scraps.

Great detail, the light shining down gives it a great feeling of being outdoors in the wilds. Great expressions on all around. Great piece.

Incredible work! I love how much you have improved in such a small amount of time! I really love the rendering job, and the story it tells, ah, it just wants me to strike off on an adventure of my own and chase after warriors with my 8 legs and fangs...:D

This is just so mind blowing! I don't think I can pick a fav part cause I love it all....
All your hard work has paid of 10-fold... Such detail & depth! It was wonderful seeing the stages of this piece - to see it become the masterpiece is it today!

I also think the story is very well written... As a wonderful artist you make a pretty good writer!

I simply can't wait to see what your next piece will be!

It is really quite amazing...

I wove a similarly driven metaphor (dragged to the darkness, action and light, etc.) using yourself as a shining example to my disillusioned husband. :) I am certain the metaphors ARE NOT the same and my oral storytelling was not about a warrior, but I did use your artwork to describe a point I had.

I will have to send him the link to the final and the story. I think he will enjoy it, too.

wowie, awesomeness! And you're not a bad writer. The story behind it makes it even more intriguing.

the gleam of the sword is perfect! and the story is really good, maybe its just my stupid train of thought but it seems metaphorical to me. but i'm an idiot. so don't listen to me.

but this picture is amazing, Jesse! <-(listen to that.) lol.
your work was well worth it!
and you know i'm the same way? when it comes to drawing, i never know what i want to end result to look like until i'm actually done. heh.
