extended absence

Dear Deviants, thanks for all the support once again :)
I lost the plot a bit towards the end of last year. I just couldn't see any reason to keep drawing. My plan to draw for a living was proving just as boring and annoying as any other job. Looking back I realise I haven't drawn anything or visited deviantart now in 5 months. I got heaps of positive comments back then when I had my big winge, but I didn't want to hear them. I was just over it.
But I'm back again. My computer completely died in the heatwave recently (at least I didn't get burned to death or flooded like half the rest of Australia). I had a backup of my artwork but everything else was lost, so I got a new and improved PC and started messing with photoshop, rebuilding all my brushes, and suddenly I was in the middle of a new picture.
I don't think I'll ever get the enthusiasm back that I had when I started out, but I do still enjoy the creative process, and I think when inspiration strikes I will continue to paint.

My apologies to all the people who asked questions of me while I was absent that were left unanswered, I will begin working through them now in an attempt to catch up again.

I hope you will continue to enjoy my artworks, that's all they're there for.

Cheers,
Jesse

You are very talented and I hope to see more. And you know, that is one reason I will never try to make a living off my artwork...I love it too much and never want that to go away. I would have to agree with Treyos...when the passion is there...it does something so much for the piece.

Thankyou :) yeah it's a question of whether 'going far' with it is in my best interests. I'm just gonna try and enjoy it for what it is again, rather than trying to make it big. Thanks for the support :)

Good to know you've made it through the Aussie summer unscathed; sounds like it's been a really rough time down there, all around.

As for art, well... if it loses it's spark when it becomes a job, then stick with the nine-to-fivers and keep your art for fun. I'd rather see two or three a year that you really enjoyed than twenty that you got paid for, but didn't like doing.

Thanks mate :) yeah we were lucky down here, it's been a hell of a summer.
You're dead right, and I reckon that's what I'm gonna do from now on. I love drawing but hate work- you'd think it'd be ok doing something you enjoy for a job- but it just doesn't work out for me. I'll stick to drawing for fun and see what dribbles out of my brain onto the page :)

it sucks hey. I had fun with my last pic though for the first time in a long while, all I had to do was draw something twisted and nasty, and suddenly all I wanted to do was get it finished so I could see what it looked like. Doesn't change the fact that I can't see any real point to it anymore except for my own amusement and to give people on deviantart a bit of entertainment. But I've decided that's enough for now. I've lost any drive to polish my technique so I can be a commercial artist, but drawing stuff fo fun and entertainment is why I began drawing in the first place- stupid cartoons of teachers and classmates doing disturbing things with various objects and animals for my mates amusement :)
I really lost track of stuff there though, as you get older theres so much pressure to be rich and successful you start judging everything based on coin and future prospects. Fuck all that I reckon. I'm here for a good time. If I slaved over a job that I hated so I could have a big house and get the fancy shallow girl, I think when I'm lying on my deathbed I'd be pretty pissed off. You can't take that shit with you. It sucks not fitting in with the rest of the sheep, but hey, we're already deviants, why not live up to the name.
I used to do airbrush portraits- just meticulously copying photos basically- and peaple thought they were amazing and I was so talented, but it was boring and didn't feel like my own work, so I went digital so I could draw my own stuff, then for some reason (money) instead of just drawing my own stuff it all became about getting better so I could draw other peoples stuff (that's all a commission feels like to me- the idea is just as, or more, important to me than how well it's painted). Stupid. So now I'm back to square one and I'm happier than I have been in years. I'm gonna go draw a naked chick in the throes of passion getting a lovebite from a friggin huge spider :) just because I want to see it for some perverse reason. It can't be a waste of time if I have fun.
That's where I'm at at the moment. messed up? maybe compared to the accepted norm. But fuck em.
Good luck getting back on track. I'm probably a bad example, but there is no right and wrong, just consequences pushed on us by society. They can stick them up their arse for all i care :) I'll never be a famous millionare, but I can make a few people laugh or squirm anywhere in the world, that makes me pretty happy.

I totally agree with your sentiment and what you say here. Sometimes it is just so much better to do your own thing because it is what you would like to see. I wish you luck with your artistic future whichever way you decide to go with it :D Personally I think you will never give it up as I suspect I won't but I may try and stop thinking about trying to get somewhere with it all... and just try and enjoy it.

Good luck to you too my friend :) yeah being ridiculously popular just means more pressure and more- harder- work as far as I can tell: two things that don't agree with me ;) but maybe I'm just lazy...

or you could MSN or something so this way you could vent directly at someone :|

seriously, drop me a line, want to know what's been going on.

hehe, thanks mate. I don't seem to vent easily, probably been living alone for too long, but I tend to just slowly work through my shit in my head. If I talk to people about it before I've got it clear in my head I end up in these massive rhetorics that go round and round as we both try and sort out things that we don't fully grasp. I usually end up talking rubbish, then finally figuring out what I was trying to decipher a month later, then I have to go back and say, "hey, ya know all that shit I was rambling on about? yeah I was completely wrong-". And I hate being wrong ;) Maybe not the best approach, as it hasn't been entirely successful...

well, i will call you on that and still give you the opp for chatting, even if it isn't venting based!

sometimes talking it out loud just helps getting it sorted out, so, you never know!

I know that feeling, and the only thing I can say is good luck. It can be challenging finding the drive and the motivation to keep going, but sometimes it helps to look back and see where you've come from and to just imagine where you might end up. It works for me sometimes.

Anyway, good luck, and good to see you around here again. :)
